Common headliner problems

Is Your Car Headliner Sagging, Peeling or Coming Loose?

The headliner is the finished fabric or other material covering the inside of your vehicle’s roof. Heat, age, deteriorating foam backing, moisture and ordinary wear can cause fabric to separate or the roof liner to lose its shape.

Sagging or Drooping Fabric

Loose roof material can hang over passengers or obstruct the view through the rear window. We assess whether the existing headliner board can be recovered.

Peeling Edges & Failed Foam

Fabric often detaches near the windshield, doors, rear glass or sunroof opening when the original foam layer and adhesive deteriorate.

Stains, Burns & Tears

Water marks, fabric damage, discoloration and aging materials can affect the appearance of the vehicle interior. We recommend appropriate repair or recovering options.

Sunroof Shades & Trim

We can discuss recovering compatible sunroof or moonroof sliding shades, surrounding fabric panels and related interior roof trim.

Classic & Custom Interiors

Original-style headliner restoration or a custom material and finish for classics, vintage trucks, collector cars and custom builds.

Missing or Damaged Panels

Damaged headliner boards and adjacent trim may need additional repair or replacement before a new fabric covering can be installed.

Important: If water caused the damage, the roof, sunroof-drain or weather-seal leak should be diagnosed and addressed before the new headliner is installed.

Remove, recover and reinstall

Complete Car Headliner Replacement & Recovering

When the foam backing breaks down, simply spraying adhesive onto the hanging fabric often does not provide a durable repair. A proper headliner recovering commonly involves removing the board, stripping away deteriorated material, preparing the surface and fitting new automotive-grade upholstery.

Fine Line performs complete headliner-board removal and installation. We evaluate the condition of the underlying board and surrounding trim, discuss appropriate materials and aim for clean edges, neat openings and a finished interior that looks consistent with the vehicle.

Vehicle systems: Removal and reassembly depend on vehicle design. Headliner work involving side-curtain airbag zones, sensors, wiring or other safety-critical components requires proper vehicle-specific handling; not every modification is appropriate.

Behind the headliner

Careful Headliner Removal & Reassembly

Some headliner projects require more than replacing fabric. On vehicles with large sunroof openings and integrated roof systems, roof trim, wiring and surrounding components may need careful removal and reinstallation to access the headliner board.

This in-progress project shows the headliner panel supported below the exposed roof frame. The red straps were used to hold components during the work.

Safety note: The presence of side-curtain airbags does not mean that Fine Line offers airbag replacement or modification. Safety-critical components require vehicle-specific handling.

Questions before you book

Headliner Repair & Replacement: Frequently Asked Questions

Can a sagging car headliner be repaired without replacing all the fabric?
Sometimes a limited repair is practical, depending on the cause and location of the damage. When the original foam backing has crumbled, recovering the entire headliner board with new material is often a longer-lasting approach. We inspect it before recommending the work.
What causes headliner fabric to fall or peel away?
Age, cabin heat, deteriorating foam backing, weakened adhesive and moisture can all contribute. The fabric commonly begins to sag near edges, interior lights, the rear window or a sunroof opening.
How much does headliner replacement cost in Denver?
Pricing depends on the vehicle size, material, headliner-board condition, sunroof or panoramic-roof configuration and the complexity of removal and reassembly. Provide the year, make, model and photos so we can discuss an estimate.
Do you remove and reinstall the entire headliner board?
Yes. Complete headliner-board removal, recovering and reinstallation are services Fine Line performs. Some vehicles require additional attention to interior trim, electrical connections or factory safety systems.
Can you match my car’s original roof liner color and texture?
We can discuss factory-style fabric, available colors and textures and other compatible automotive materials. Exact matches depend on the vehicle’s age, fading and material availability. When necessary, we explain close-match or custom alternatives.
Do you repair sunroof shades or fabric around a moonroof?
Yes, we can evaluate compatible sunroof shades and the surrounding headliner upholstery. Mechanical or electrical sunroof issues may require separate diagnosis. Tell us the vehicle model and what the shade or roof is doing.
Can you repair headliner stains caused by a water leak?
We can evaluate stained or damaged headliner material, but the source of water entry should be found and corrected before replacing the interior fabric. Otherwise, moisture can damage the replacement headliner again.
Do you work on headliners in classic cars and trucks?
Yes. Fine Line handles classic and specialty vehicle interiors, including headliner restoration and custom upholstery. The correct approach depends on the vehicle’s original construction, remaining materials and restoration goals.
How long does car headliner replacement take?
The schedule varies by vehicle design, the condition of the headliner board, materials availability and current workload. We can discuss timing once we have the vehicle details and have evaluated the project.
